Pig, Hive both are data warehousing solutions built on the top of Hdfs. Hive is for people who are familiar with SQL whereas pig is data flow language (pig latin). You can you hive for only structured and semi-structured data whereas pig for all type of data including unstructured. Both hive and pig jobs are converted into MapReduce jobs in the background during the execution

in Hive we have a concept of Partition and Buckets but in pig it is not available, a pig is a data flow language so need to write different steps

If it’s booting up then there is no problem with installed Ubuntu guest OS. Probably your system may be busy running some other CPU or Memory bound processes.

Also, try increasing the RAM to 1.5 GB for Ubuntu OS if you have sufficient RAM on your system
    1. Power off the machine
    2. Open “Virtual Box Manager”
    3. Go to settings
    4. click on “System”
    5. Increase RAM.
    Try rebooting after a change.

Are mapper and Reducer tasks directly proportional? What I meant to ask is, if there were 4 mappers will there be only 4 reducers?

And if a mapper runs in host A will the reducer run in the same node? How is that managed/controlled?

Mappers and Reducers are the general entities of a JVM processes. You can set these numbers independently and it all depends on the nature of job you are running.

As I said Mappers and Reducers are a JVM process or a compute entity, they can run where ever TaskTrackers are configured.
